SELF-CHARGING FORD S-MAX HYBRID
The self-charging S-MAX hybrid combines a highly efficient 2.5-litre Atkinson Cycle Petrol engine with a battery-powered electric motor. The S-MAX hybrid system recaptures energy usually lost while coasting and decelerating and uses it to recharge battery, so there’s no need to plug in to recharge. And since it has a powerful water-cooled battery it also lets you drive short distances on electric power alone.
To preserve boot space, the battery is nested under the floor of the FHEV. While achieving CO2 emissions of just 146g/km, the new engine delivers an impressive 110kW (150PS) of power and 200 Nm of torque, where the electric motor provide 30kW (40PS) power and 235Nm torque which combined has a system power of 140kW (190PS). As a result, the S-MAX Hybrid has a towing capacity of 1750 kg: enough for a small boat, for example.
