Driving Experience

Transit Custom is agile and easy to drive, even with a full payload. To help make driving as relaxing and easy as possible, it’s available with many clever technologies.

Features shown on this page may only be available on selected models. Where available, these features may be optional extras at additional cost. For more info, download price list to view current UK specifications.

A system that can help protect pedestrians

Pre-Collision Assist detects vehicles and pedestrians in the road ahead, or who could cross the vehicle’s path, and warns you of their presence. If you don’t respond, the system automatically applies the brakes. This technology is designed to help reduce the severity of accidents, or help avoid them altogether, and functions at speeds of up to 50 mph.

SelectShift automatic transmission

SelectShift automatic transmission

Both the 130 PS and 170 PS engines are available with a new six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. This is designed to provide a smooth and relaxing driving experience, especially in busy stop-start traffic. The transmission allows you to change gear manually if you prefer, using the facia-mounted gearshift. It also provides the ability to lock out gears in more challenging driving conditions, e.g. on slippery surfaces or steep gradients.

Cruise control makes longer drives more relaxed

You can set the speed, using the cruise control toggles on the steering wheel. The system then maintains that speed, so you don’t have to keep your foot on the accelerator. To go faster or slower, you simply use the same controls.

Cruise Control

An advanced system to help you stay in lane

If it detects that you’re accidentally drifting out of lane, Lane-Keeping Alert can alert you by vibrating the steering wheel and displaying a visual warning.

Driver Alert System tells you when you’re getting tired

Driver Alert System constantly monitors your driving behaviour and is designed to detect any changes that could be caused by fatigue. If the system identifies you’re becoming less vigilant, a warning icon appears in the display, suggesting you take a break. If your driving alertness further declines, the message is repeated and combined with a chime.

Traffic Sign Recognition

Sees the road signs you might miss

Whether the signs are at the side of the road or above it, permanent or temporary, Traffic Sign Recognition can identify them. An icon of that speed or a no-overtaking sign appears on the instrument cluster and changes every time you enter a new limit.

Easier, safer reversing

Bollards, bicycles, low walls… The rear-view camera shows what’s behind you on a screen built into the centre console. As well as revealing objects you might miss, the system displays virtual lines to help you park into the smallest of spaces. The camera activates automatically when you select reverse gear.

Sensors that take the stress out of parking

Parking distance sensors help you judge the distance between your vehicle and obstacles around you. When the sensors detect an object, they activate an audible warning that intensifies the closer you get to it.

Headlights that turn on automatically when needed

Automatic headlights use a sensor that detects failing light at dusk, or when there’s a sudden change in light conditions. This triggers the automatic headlights to turn themselves on, which can make driving both easier and safer.

Auto High Beam

Helping you see, without dazzling others

A useful night-driving aid, Auto High Beam temporarily dips your headlights when it detects oncoming traffic or a vehicle ahead, stopping you dazzling other drivers. It then automatically reverts back to high beam, giving you maximum visibility.

Lights that give you better nighttime visibility

If you’re indicating and turning into a road or pulling into a parking space, a light positioned at the top of the headlamp automatically illuminates the side of the road to give you enhanced visibility through the turn.

Rain-sensing wipers

Wipers that automatically adjust to the rain

Rain-sensing wipers spring into action when they detect moisture on your windscreen, then adjust their speed to deal with whatever the weather throws at you. You can even choose from several sensitivity levels that determine how much moisture can build up before the wipers activate.

Controlled fun with a finely tuned chassis

A meticulously tuned chassis, substantially stiffened in both front and rear axles, brings excellent levels of stability and control - and an optimised, ultra-stiff body structure.

Maximum cornering control

Torque Vectoring Control reacts to the road surface 100 times per second. (That’s 33 times faster than the blink of an eye.) Using this information, it balances the amount of power delivered to each of the two front wheels. This maximises grip and sharpens handling, helping you round corners and over undulations in the road.

Rear air suspension

With rear air suspension, the system automatically adjusts to maintain a constant ride height, regardless of the loading conditions. This means you'll enjoy a smoother ride whether alone, with passengers or in a fully laden vehicle.

Transit Custom Extra control on hill starts

Extra control during hill starts

Hill Start Assist temporarily stops you rolling backwards or forwards when making a hill start. The system works by maintaining pressure to the braking system for an extra 2-3 seconds, giving you more time and control as you move your foot from brake pedal to accelerator. It’s also useful when you’re stopping and starting on slippery surfaces.

Control features that adapt to your load

Load Adaptive Control adjusts the Electronic Stability Control according to the overall weight your Transit Custom is carrying. This ensures control and stability whether empty or fully loaded.

Side Wind Stabilisation

Side Wind Stabilisation

Helps the driver to stay in lane in strong, gusty conditions by using the Electronic Stability Control system to sense when the vehicle is being affected by crosswinds.

Ford SYNC with Emergency Assistance

An important and potentially life-saving part of Ford SYNC is Emergency AssistanceFord Emergency Assistance - updated. In the unlikely event of an accident, where the airbag is deployed or the fuel-pump deactivated, the technology can use a Bluetooth®-paired and connected mobile phone to automatically make a direct call to the Emergency Services for you. You can choose to stop the call, or talk to those services if you need to. Crucially, the system will supply vital information, such as your GPS coordinates, even if you are unconscious.
