Mild hybrid vehicles
Mild hybrid electric vehicles (MHEVs) use a battery-powered electric motor alongside a conventional petrol or diesel engine to improve efficiency and reduce emissions, with no need to plug in.
Why choose a mild hybrid?
Improved economy
The electric motor's assistance reduces demand on the engine, helping to improve fuel economy.
No need to charge
There's no need to find a charging point, as regenerative braking charges the battery as you drive.
Familiar experience
It feels just like driving a conventional vehicle, but with a more responsive engine and improved efficiency.
How does a mild hybrid work?
Power
Mild hybrids combine an electric motor and 48-volt battery with a petrol engine. The electric motor seamlessly integrates with the engine and uses stored energy to provide extra torque.
Charging
The system monitors usage to determine when to use or charge the battery. Energy is stored in the 48-volt battery, ready to supplement the petrol engine.

Your mild hybrid questions, answered
Can a mild hybrid car drive on electric power only?
No, a mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) uses a battery-powered electric motor alongside a conventional petrol or diesel engine to improve efficiency and reduce emissions. They don't charge from an external power source.
How does a mild hybrid engine work?
The petrol engine is assisted by an electric motor. At low speed, or when stationary, the engine can switch itself off and seamlessly restart when needed. The battery is automatically recharged by regenerative braking.
How does regenerative braking work?
All Ford mild hybrid vehicles use regenerative braking technology. The system captures energy that’s usually lost when braking and feeds it back to the battery, helping to maximise range.
