New Focus Music on the Move
Focus Music on the Move
Beautifully arranged
As befits a car which is so beautifully arranged, the New Focus national launch campaign features an orchestra playing instruments made entirely from the components of a dismantled Ford Focus. These were designed by Bill Milbrodt, an American musician who’s been making music from parts of cars for years.

As the ads and the music have received such a great reception, we’ve stepped up a gear. We got in touch with Times Online and some special friends and made some beautiful music together. It’s also for a very good cause – the Teenage Cancer Trust.

A great driving song
The ensemble includes two British rock legends and an amateur songwriter, plus musicians from the Academy of Contemporary Music and the National Symphony Orchestra. Not forgetting some more instruments from dismantled Ford Focuses. The end result has made musical history.

The track is called Six O’Clock in the Morning, and features Mike Rutherford (of Genesis and Mike and the Mechanics fame) on ‘clutchplate guitar’, plus Kenny Jones (of the Faces and the Who), drumming, tapping, jangling and scraping away on wheel-rims, cogs, springs and gears. Arranged by Tim Woods, the song was written by Richard Watson, who also performs the vocals.

It all comes together beautifully – and makes a great download. You’ll find it at www.timesonline.co.uk/carparts. There, you can also donate 79p (the price of one track on iTunes) or even more to the Teenage Cancer Trust charity – the link has all the details.

Going on the road for charity
We are also supporting the Teenage Cancer Trust at various venues round the country. At each event, you’ll be able to hear and see the instruments from the song and the advertising campaign, as well as talk to a member of the design team.

The tour includes the following venues:

London, The Royal Albert Hall
headlined by Paul Weller, the Fratellis, Muse, and featuring Mike Rutherford and Kenny Jones and our very own Carparts, April 11

London,The Hospital, Covent Garden, April 17–19

Glasgow, The Old Fruitmarket, April 24–26

Liverpool, St George’s Hall, May 9

At all venues, the instruments will be on display from 11am – 6pm. There’ll also be live musical performances at 1.15pm and 5.15pm. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust.
