Ford invests in Green Technology for future
The UK Government’s £360 million backing of a £450 million loan to Ford from the European Investment Bank supports Ford’s planned £1.5 billion investment in low-carbon and environmentally friendly engine and vehicle technology in the UK over the next five years.

Business minister Mark Prisk commented that “this backing from the Government will help to ensure the long-term success of manufacturing in the UK and make sure we are at the forefront of new technologies.”The investment will be in Ford’s four UK engineering and manufacturing facilities at Dagenham, Bridgend, Southampton and Dunton.

Dagenham in Essex is Ford’s global diesel centre of excellence and produces one million engines a year. Currently, 25% of all Ford engines worldwide and over 50% of all its diesel engines are made in the UK. Engines assembled at Dagenham emit as little as 98g CO2/km.

Bridgend in south Wales builds 600,000 petrol engines each year and in 2010 an estimated 430,000 of these will be EcoBoost, including the new 1.6-litre going into new C-MAX and new Focus.

Southampton produces 130 Transit units each working day. Ford’s research and development centre in Dunton, Essex, is the country’s largest automotive engineering facility.

Ford is also a partner in a joint venture at Halewood on Merseyside where Ford Getrag builds more than 400,000 five and six-speed transmissions each year.
