Features to protect you if you're in an accident
Our advanced Intelligent Protection System (IPS) offers you a package of active and passive safety features to keep you safe on the road.

The passive safety features are those designed to protect you and your passengers from injury, when a collision is unavoidable. You can read more about them below.

The Ford IPS also includes technology to help you avoid an accident in the first place. Find out more about Ford IPS’ active safety features.
Rigid safety cell
To protect you and your passengers, all our cars have an ultra stiff body structure, created using laser-welded high-strength steels. This rigid safety cell is surrounded by energy-absorbing crumple zones that help minimise the effects of a collision.
Seatbelts
Our advanced seatbelts help protect you and your passengers in an accident. The pretensioners help reduce the effect of the impact, by taking up any slack between you and your seatbelt 5 to 10 milliseconds before your airbags activate.

ISOFIX mounts for child seats in the outside rear seats are also available on the following Ford cars:

New Ka
New Fiesta
Focus
C-MAX
New Kuga
Mondeo
S-MAX
Galaxy
State-of-the-art airbags
Ford airbags feature state-of-the-art inflater technology, to cater for drivers and passengers of different sizes and collisions of different types.

Of course, their main function is to offer protection in a high-speed impact. However, ours are also designed to minimise the risk of injuries caused by the airbags themselves, to passengers who are ‘out of position’ when the impact takes place. By ‘out of position’ we mean, for example, turning around in their seat to talk to a passenger behind them, rather than sitting facing directly ahead.

Our range of vehicles offers the following types of airbag to protect you and your passengers from injury:
  • Driver’s knee airbag
  • Driver and front passenger airbag*
  • Front seat side airbags
  • Side curtain airbags
*Note: A child seat should never be placed in the front passenger seat when the Ford vehicle is equipped with an operational front passenger’s airbag. The safest place for children is properly restrained on the rear seat.
Pedal intrusion prevention system (PIPS)
In the event of an accident, the pedal intrusion prevention system automatically retracts the pedals – significantly reducing the risk of serious injury to the driver's feet and ankles.
Anti-whiplash front head restraints
In a severe rear impact, anti-whiplash front head restraints move up and forwards to support the heads of the driver and front passenger. The restraints increase their support with the force of the impact, while dynamically adapting to control the occupants’ movement. This reduces the risk of the whiplash injuries that are so commonly caused by collisions from the rear.
