S-MAX Interior
Technical highlights of the S-MAX
Packed with the latest technology, the S-MAX has been specially designed to help make every journey safer, simpler and more engaging for drivers and their passengers.

S-MAX has a range of technologies that perfectly suit you and your family’s practical needs – as well as satisfy your desire for some independence.
Human Machine Interface (HMI) and Ford Convers+
This intuitive digital command centre helps you stay in complete control of many of the car’s systems. Featuring a standard, enhanced or Ford Convers+ cluster display, the HMI is operated by two steering wheel-mounted toggles for audio and vehicle settings. With the left toggle you can find and change radio stations or CD tracks, as well as set the volume. The right toggle switch controls the cluster display for vehicle settings and the trip computer. On the Ford Convers+ cluster display, the right toggle lets you scroll through MultiMedia lists, controlling the phone, radio, and CD player. An optional USB/MP3/iPod® connectivity port is also available.
Audio systems
S-MAX has a range of audio options that add a new dimension to your in-car music experience. For example, you can choose the high-performance Sony audio system with a DAB digital radio. There’s also MP3 playback capability (with a Bluetooth® option), as well as an external AUX jack and a USB port for plugging in and controlling your MP3 player.
Sony Digital Audio System
Enjoy a powerful, in-car audio experience, incorporating crystal clear DAB radio reception. The screen on the digital audio system can also display information on the programme you’re listening to, such as the plot summary of a radio play.
Touchscreen Navigation PLUS system with rear view camera and USB connectivity
The crown jewel in the centre console, this system is the ultimate in navigation, connectivity and touch-screen convenience and clarity. Being an integrated system, it responds to real-time road speed and the latest traffic conditions to deliver more accurate estimated arrival times and trip information.
USB interface and audio streaming
With the S-MAX, you can use a USB connection to plug in your MP3 player and view your favourite tracks on the car’s dashboard display. To control the music, simply operate the HMI controls. Additionally, audio streaming enables you to transfer music and text from your Bluetooth®-enabled music player or mobile phone to the car’s audio system. (Option) Compatible with Bluetooth® Hands-Free and Voice Control System.
Ford Individual Rear Seat Entertainment System (DVD)
Ford S-MAX’s in-car entertainment features a built-in DVD player with two independently-operated 7" LCD screens, remote control and two wireless headphones. So even your most demanding passengers can enjoy their own personal space with movies and computer games. Includes Component AV inputs. (Option on Titanium and Titanium S)
LED daytime running lights
Offering increased visibility to other road users, the new LED daytime running lights are typical of the attention to detail to be found throughout S-MAX. This stylish design detail is also more energy efficient than dipped headlights due to its use of the latest LED technology.
Bi-xenon HID headlights
S-MAX’s bi-xenon HID headlights are more than twice as powerful as conventional headlights, but use only two-thirds of the energy. Also includes static cornering lights and headlight washers.
Static cornering lights
Integrated into the halogen Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) and bi-xenon HID headlights, static cornering lights are activated when you turn the steering wheel 30°. These give even more light on sharper bends, to help you avoid any potential problems.
LED rear lights
Lighting technology at its most eye catching. The bright and long-lasting LED lights improve visibility and add an attractive night time appearance. (Standard)
Enhanced LED interior lighting system
LED technology has also found its way to the interior of the new Ford S-MAX. Standard on S-MAX Titanium and Titanium X Sport and every S-MAX fitted with a panorama roof, the enhanced interior lighting boosts illumination for all passengers.
Emergency Brake Warning
The rear brake lights are activated and repeatedly flashed during heavy braking, giving following drivers advance warning of a potentially hazardous situation. (Standard)
Rear-view camera
Select reverse and the rear-view camera comes on automatically in the DVD navigation display, allowing you to see objects behind your car for safer and easier manoeuvring. Special guidance graphics indicate the distance, width and centre line of the car, based on the steering angle. (Option)
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Forward Alert (FA)
With ACC you can automatically keep your chosen distance from the car in front. Should the car in front slow down and reduce the gap, your speed drops, too. And when traffic speeds up, you automatically return to cruising speed. Meanwhile, FA monitors your distance to the vehicle in front and if you drive too close, a warning noise and flashing light activate.
Adjustable Speed Limiting Device (ASLD)
This new driver assistance system is included as part of cruise control. ASLD is designed to help drivers avoid exceeding driver-selected speeds unintentionally – for example, staying within legal speed limits during long road trips. By using enhanced cruise control switches on the steering wheel, you can adjust your top speed limit within a range of 19 to112 mph. Should you try to exceed that range, the engine management system intervenes to maintain your set speed limit.
Blind Spot Information System
This high-tech visual aid is designed to make longer journeys a far more relaxing experience. As another vehicle enters your blind spot, the system alerts you with a discreet warning lamp built into the driver’s door mirror. (Option)
Auto headlights
The lighting technology in S-MAX has been designed to make night-time driving easier, safer and more comfortable. The headlights automatically turn on when the sensors detect a reduction in light conditions (including when the rain-sensing wipers are in use), which means you won’t need to turn them on at dusk, at night, or when you are going through a tunnel.
Park Assist
There are front and rear sensors that make parking and manoeuvring both safer and easier. An audible warning helps you judge the distance between your car and any obstacle behind or in front of you, so you have complete confidence and peace of mind, particularly in tight spaces.
Hill Start Assist (HSA)
HSA prevents you from rolling backwards when making a hill start. After releasing the brake pedal when stationary, the technology keeps the wheels braked, assisting the driver to move away safely.
Rain-sensing wipers
With six levels of sensitivity, autowipers on the S-MAX spring into action at the first drop of rain, increasing in speed to deal with whatever the weather may throw at you. Aside from the added convenience, it’s one less thing to think about.
Ford Easy Fuel
People often mistakenly add diesel to their petrol tank – or vice versa. Ford Easy Fuel is a capless refuelling system with a mis-fuelling inhibitor that can tell the difference between the fuel pump nozzles used for petrol and diesel. So you’ll never put the wrong fuel in.
Quickclear heated windscreen
At the touch of a button, heating elements within the windscreen activate immediately to quickly and conveniently clear it of ice and mist.
Ford Fold Flat System (FFS)
You could be a DIY enthusiast, or your daughter’s mountain bike could need picking up, or maybe you’ve been nominated as roadie for your son’s band. Whatever you and your family need to carry, S-MAX is flexible enough to cope. FFS means each rear seat folds down flush with the floor, plus the second-row seats can also slide and tilt. In total, there are an astonishing 32 possible seating combinations.
Power child door and window locks
At the click of a button, this innovative feature enables you to safely secure your most precious backseat passengers.
Home Safe Lighting
The headlights and optional puddle lights stay on for a few extra seconds as you walk away from your car. A convenient feature that should help you see your way safely to your door at night.
FordPower starter button
You no longer need to insert the key into the ignition to start the car. You simply push the power button while holding the clutch down (or brake pedal on an automatic) and the engine fires into life. Also available with the Ford Key-Free System: the keyless entry system that lets you lock and unlock your car without taking your key out of your pocket or bag.
Electric Parking Brake (EPB)
The easy-to-operate EPB is engaged and disengaged at the flick of a centre console-mounted switch. EPB replaces the conventional handbrake, freeing up space.
Static cornering lights
Integrated into the halogen Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) and bi-xenon HID headlights, static cornering lights are activated when you turn the steering wheel 30°. These give even more light on sharper bends, to help you avoid any potential problems.

Cooled passenger glove box
By using air from the air conditioning system, the glove box is kept at a pleasant temperature.
